The heart of any chemical warfare or biological warfare carbon filter is always the
blower.
Trying to get air through a
carbon block filter is a little like trying to blow air through a ¾ inch piece
of plywood. Well, O.K. – it’s not that
bad, but you get the idea. Because of
this high static pressure requirement, the engineers at Filter Science have
developed the most advanced and efficient blower for a biological warfare or chemical warfare filter
available today. Designed from the bottom up specifically for your
filter, it utilizes advanced custom computer technology to satisfy the demanding
needs of an extended Nuclear, Biological, or Chemical attack.

Secure Blower
Housing The housing of every blower is 20 gauge welded
steel.
It is painted with an
electrostatic deposition powder coat for long life and durability. In areas of blower attachment to the filter
frame, we utilize 16 gauge steel for superior strength. Each blower housing is fitted with a highly
specialized curved inlet ring for maximum performance. The air intake guard is 16 gauge Stainless Steel.

During an emergency, power may become a very important commodity. If you are using a back up generator as a
power supply, the more your Nuclear, Biological and Chemical filter uses, the
less electricity you will have for other, possibly life saving, needs. The time
to think about power consumption is before you purchase a filter. If you lose the power grid in your area, and
you only have battery power – the power consumption of your filter motor may
become an important issue indeed. To
this end, the engineers at Filter Science have chosen to utilize a 24 Volt Brushless DC blower with Pulse Width Modulation speed control. The advantages of a brushless DC external
rotor motor are numerous. They have a
favorable compact size because the motor is mounted within the blades or
impeller.
These motors eliminate voltage
or frequency variables, reduce EMI, operate more safely and have smoother
acceleration.
Why a 24 Volt blower if I am using house current? A good question, and the answer is a little
complex, but we will try to make it simple. A well wound DC motor is far more efficient than its 110 volt
counterpart. If, instead of brushes, you use a brushless
technology which uses electronic circuitry to rapidly switch the magnetic
fields instead of mechanical brushes, you are again increasing the efficiency,
as well as extending the motor life to 50,000 hours instead of the standard 4
or 5,000 hours on a motor with brushes.
If you then control this motor with a PWM line or Pulse Width
Modulation, you again increase efficiency. These are all expensive options in blower
production and significantly increase blower cost, however, the blower in each
of our units is now close to five times more efficient in electrical power
usage.

In addition, all our motors are totally enclosed so they
run clean and stay clean. This gives you
longer life and trouble free operation. The motor and blower will be there when you
need them the most.

NBC Filter Enclosure - All Steel
Construction
Every Filter Science unit is constructed of heavy duty, 16 gauge steel. Our laser
cutting, metal stamping and forming are all done in Phoenix, Arizona. We run an extensive line of modern CNC
machines and press brakes to ensure exacting dimensions and quality. The quality of our steel parts is ensured by
state-of-the-art laser measurement.
We utilize a paperless workflow system where the entire
fabrication, assembly process and assembly instructions are accessed on-line to
ensure the most up-to-date, accurate information. A shop floor computerized control system
ensures a smooth flow of material and labor.
Filter
Science has taken pride in manufacturing a unit which is unobtrusive in your
daily life. We understand that in order
to be ready for a terrorist event, your unit may have to become a daily part of
your décor. We tried hard to take this
into consideration in our initial design.
In
many areas of construction, we use 304 Stainless Steel or 6063T6 Aluminum to
assure your Nuclear, Biological and Chemical filter will be there when you need
it.
Stainless Steel gives you the
tensile strength and corrosion resistance required of difficult environments,
along with the modern look of stability. From the harsh salt air of the coasts, to the humidly of the south, and
the cold of the northern states – our biological warfare and chemcial warfare unit has been built with you in mind.
Hardware, Controls and
Handles Every
aspect of your Filter Science unit has undergone diligent and rigorous testing before
it has become part of our family of products. The hardware and controls were no exception. Before a part we did not manufacture, became
part of a Filter Science unit, it had to fulfill our specifications and pass,
or surpass our tests.
Air Control Valves
The NBC 450 is equipped with two 6 inch air intakes
and each of these intakes has its own Stainless Steel valve. One valve
will bring outside air into the filter and the other will bring inside room air
into the filter. Each valve can be easily operated between fully open and
fully closed. This added safety feature on the NBC 450 allows the user
to select between outside air, inside air, or an infinite combination of the two.
Positive Position Air
Control Valves Handles
Each
valve handle is made of glass-fiber reinforced polyamide (PA)
technopolymer.
It is resistant to
solvents, oils, grease and other chemical agents. It has a black oxide steel boss with a H7
standard tolerance reamed hole for a sure fit to the 6063T6 aluminum valve
shaft.
Operation
of the air control valve in your unit is performed smoothly thanks to the
heavy-duty arm of the lever, while the enlarged and sunken semi-spherical end
offers a comfortable support for the palm of the hand and an effective
grip.
Our handle has two 180 degree
holes for the positive control ball and spring click positioning
operation.
This gives you the assurance
this valve is going to stay in position in the event of a Nuclear, Biological
or Chemical attack.
Positive Position Hinges The
hinges on your unit are made of die cast zinc, with a black urethane enamel
finish. The hinge shaft is carbon steel. Each hinge has 2 o-rings and 2 die-cast steel bushings. The tensile strength of these hinges is
excellent with a radial average ultimate load of 1550 pounds and an axial load
of 450 pounds.
These
hinges are constant torque friction hinges which will hold the filter door open
without secondary mechanical support. In
other words – if you need to change a filter – the door will stay in whatever
convenient position you place it. Remember, it’s the little things that count in an emergency, and we pave the way for you.

Convenient Carrying Handles Each
unit handle is made of glass-fiber reinforced polyamide (PA)
technopolymer.
It is resistant to
solvents, oils, grease and other chemical agents. Each handle utilizes brass inserts for secure
attachment to the filter cabinet.
Tensile stress and impact strength of 448 pounds come from breaking
tests carried out under stringent test conditions. So what does all that mean for your filter –
it means this handle can absorb very strong shocks and thanks to its special
technopolymer – it will never break. If
you need to move your filter in an emergency, the last thing you need is a
broken handle. The engineers at Filter
Science have made sure that will never happen.
Steel Cabinet Latches The
latches of a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical filter are central to its proper
function.
Ours are case hardened, 12L14
steel with a zinc alloy plate, plus a sealer. The latching spring is 1064 steel with a black powder coat. All rivets on this latch are 430 Stainless
Steel.
The
ability of this latch to keep the proper torque and tensional control over your
filter latching system surpasses even our high standards.
Stainless Steel Grills
Filter Science utilizes a heavy 304 Stainless Steel
for all its vent openings. This steel is
plasma cut for stand-off accuracy with a brushed steel finish for a great look.
Flange
Adapters
Each Flange Adapter on the Filter Science unit is 18 gauge
steel with an electrostatic deposition powder coat finish to match the cabinet. This heavy gauge steel adapter provides a security
level between you and your outside connection. It is clearly marked for accuracy
and convenience.
Circuit Breakers Every Filter Science unit is protected by two circuit breakers. Fuses simply won’t do if you are trying to
re-establish power in an emergency. Each
of these circuit breakers is a simple “push to reset”. One is
for the AC side and the other for the DC side.
DC Battery Connections Conveniently located on each unit are two Nylon insulated connection
posts for connecting your DC power in an emergency - red for connection to the
positive battery terminal and black for connection to the negative battery
terminal. Simply flip the on/off switch
to DC power and you will be operating on DC power.
On/Off and Variable Speed
Control In the event of an explosive terrorist attack, it is common for a large
amount of dust and debris to fill the air. Remember the dust and debris in the air after 911?
While your Filter Science NBC filter will handle far more of this debris
than any other filter, it too can become “loaded” with these airborne particles. As this occurs, you will need more fan power
to overcome the clogging effect of this debris.
The engineers at Filter Science have provided you with this life saving
option. With our variable speed control
and powerful blower, you can increase your blower power to maintain the same
amount of clean airflow.

Quick Change Filter Design In a long period emergency, you may wish to change one or more of your
filters.
The original design engineers at
Filter Science gave this option a high priority. The result is our patented split cabinet design, which
allows you to change your Nuclear
Grade Particulate Filter, your Carbon Filter or your Prefilter, in
less than 10 seconds. Example: In the paragraph above we describe the dust
laden air which can accompany a terrorist attack. Most of this debris will be captured in our
four layer progressive density prefilter which has been designed to capture 85 % of the large airborne
particles and protect the Nuclear Grade, High Density, Particilate filter and the Carbon
filter. With our split cabinet design
and double gasket construction, you can safely change this prefilter in
just a few seconds. This will restore
full airflow to your filter, without increasing air speed, should you wish to
utilize this option. Your nuclear warfare, biological warfare and chemcial warfare filter will be back in business.

Double Gasket Construction One of the keys to a well designed Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Filtration
system is to make sure there is no air leakage. With
this in mind, we have engineered a double gasket protection system, and utilized
it on all our units. Each filter is protected with its own gasket. In addition, each individual cabinet in our
filter is protected by an additional gasket. When you close the door of a
Filter Science unit, both gaskets seal simultaneously.
Puzzle Cut Gaskets In addition, each of our gaskets is puzzle cut, instead of simply cutting
them on a straight 45 degree angle. This
puzzle cut enhances the air retention properties of the gasket and greatly
reduces leakage. This attention to
detail, gives you and your family the assurance of protection you need in a
Nuclear Warfare, Biological Warfare or Chemical Warfare emergency.
